Samsung Tablet

By

Forget the iPad, it may have started the revolution but it can’t compete with the new generation of android based tablets. Although there have been more than a few android tablets, the Samsung tablet marks the first of the major companies to jump into the fray. Every Samsung Galaxy Review out there has had lots of positive things to say about the device, showing that Android is well liked and garnering as much popularity as Apple's mobile OS.

Better than the iPad on numerous fronts the major difference is the much better form factor, the tab can actually be carried around and used more in the spirit of a mobile device held with one hand while used with the other, a feat that’s much harder with Apple’s device.

The Tab is an Attractive Device

The samsung galaxy tablet specs are rather exciting, especially for those who have been waiting for something more compelling than what's already available. Among the features that make the Samsung Galaxy Tab a bit of an iPad slayer the major one is the 7inch screen, making it easier to hold and use. It features Google Android OS, which gives it access to a growing catalogue of apps. As Android grows in popularity, more tablets will continue to appear, but even as an early entrant to the fray the Tab is a well rounded device.

Before now there were many flaws among the contenders. The JooJoo for one was a pretty good looking device and had a very large screen, but remained crippled by its lack of OS and diskspace, making it nothing more than a thin client. On its lack of apps, the PR department at JooJoo cited the internet as being the ultimate resource for apps, but those who use internet apps regularly will know that they are dissjointed, unorganized, unfinished, and can't beat the convenience of a real app store. The samsung tablet pc on the other hand is a much better contender and offers a good meaty OS, apps, and form factor making it as more than a mere browser and a good choice as an iPad killer. It's even attracted the ire of Steve Jobs, buttressing the opinion that it might be snapping a little too closely at the heels of the original tablet.

Compared with the iPad the 4.72 inch wide screen is a joy to use on the go, which may have prompted Apple to be a little protective of their own device given it's more akward form factor. Weighing in at 385 grams the tab is also easier to carry and use in a more fluid manner. And there are far more pockets around that the Samsung Galaxy S will fit in than Apple's can. Both the iPad and the Tab have similar screen resolutions, with the iPad having a screen size of 1024x768 and the tab at 1024x600.

In terms of usability, the Tab is very high with it being both a responsive device, and having the benefits of a good interface. Unfortunately there are reports that Adobe Flash has the tendency to bog the device down with its 1Ghz processor perhaps not up to the task of dealing with the resource hungry platform. This more than anything else vindicates Apple's behaviour at trying to keep flash off their platform. In terms of connectability the Galaxy Tab has everything from 3G to Wi-Fi, making it a good choice next to the iPad. Bluetooth is also there which is perhaps just as well, given the looks users may draw if holding something as large as the tab up to their face. When comparing the two units it has to be said that the iPad has the smoother operation. Apple has their OS nailed down tighter, and Android is more loose and rough around the edges. It is hoped that most people would enjoy the extra liberty Android gives them. Because of that liberty, when it comes to the samsung tablet android is its greatest strength.

The Tab has more than enough storage for a mobile device. 16GB of internal memory should be hard enough to fill up, and those who are hungry for more can add up to 32GB via micro SDHC. The Samsung Galaxy Tab price should put it in the same range as the iPAD but may disappoint those who were hoping for something to beat it in price.

It's hard to find much to complain about with a device as well rounded and usable as this. The samsung tablet computer is a clear winner and it will surely be easy for those who buy it to get their money’s worth out of it.

I've been wanting one of these for my daughter but the more I look at them the more I want one for me!

That is a really great comparison between the two tablet computers! Thanks for that, very useful. What keep me inclined towards the Ipad is that it is NOT Microsoft Nor Google. I tend to distrust the big guns in any industry, but that might be just me ;-) SY

You have a point. Now that I think about it, Android being controlled by Google does raise some questions.
