Bathroom Lights

The bathroom is a very important room. It’s where most people start the day, as they soon wake up and head for their morning shower or at the very least to brush their teeth before heading to the kitchen for some breakfast. Because of this, it makes sense that the bathroom should be comfortable, a place for pampering. So it is only natural that a great deal of attention should be paid to lighting.

Natural light is of course the most important lighting element in every bathroom and every opportunity should be taken to make the most of this most abundant and warming light source. Nothing is more pleasurable than the sun streaming in the bathroom window in the morning. It is also the most helpful light for applying makeup. Once everything has been done to take the best advantage of what natural light there is, the next thing is to look closely at the artificial lighting needed. The bathroom lights should compliment the daylight.

At the simplest level, a bathroom light will be bright enough to help those using the bathroom to avoid accidents. Nothing could be worse than not seeing water on the floor and slipping. To that end, sensible lights win out in the end. Lamps can be used to illuminate the bathroom and are fairly cheap as well. If the budget allows then making these recessed is a worthwhile investment. Good positioning will enhance the bathroom by letting the light play off the surfaces for the best effect. Having multiple light sources helps enable this. It’s also worth looking at where lamps can be fitted that will add interest and enhance the room.

Elegance of course demands something unusual. Chandeliers have been growing in popularity recently and are starting to see use in more and more bathrooms. They certainly work as a statement of luxury, and look good too. The most popular types of chandeliers in this setting are the more minimalistic, for easy cleaning, such as wrought-iron, steel as well as glass.

Not all bathrooms can support something as extravagant as a chandelier, and in those instances lamps are a good choice. They not only have a wide range of possibilities when it comes to layout, and lots of scope for experimentation, but at the same time are easy to source. Bathroom lamps maybe aren't as exotic as other lamps in the bathroom but they do the job very well.

Wall sconces are another good option for the bathroom, and create a very warm and inviting light. As a bonus they are also very nice looking when used in combination with mirrors due to the interest added by the sconce.

The wide range of variations in the types of light cast by different bulbs creates another challenge for the would be designer. It means that whatever is installed will be slightly different for each type of light, with some lights brighter and giving off white light while others cast a glowing and welcoming golden light. Planning ahead and making best use of these differences is a must. Incandescent light bulbs are slowly disappearing while new energy saving bulbs do a similar job but in a completely different way. Planning ahead to think about whether a particular bulb will be around a few years from now is a must.

Another type of lighting that can be employed in the bathroom is task lighting which is used for a specific task such as when shaving or brushing teeth. This lighting was the type that was traditionally seen in dressers, and is usually ideal for such delicate tasks.

Other considerations are mainly common sense. More light can get into the room if the partitions within the bathroom are in some way transparent. All the fitting should naturally be moisture proof in order to avoid problems with the moist environment and condensation. Energy efficiency is of course very important in these times, so adding that to the mix has great benefits for our children. Dimmers can of course be used. Dimmers are great for creating an ad-hoc atmosphere, but do shop around as some dimmer switches can be very noisy. Mirrors can also be used creatively to enhance the room.

The best part about bathroom lighting is the fun that can be had when exploring the possibilities, and settling on an arrangement that works with and enhances the space.

Bathroom lighting is so important. If it is not just right you might have some really nasty surprises in the morning. That is why I think using good halogen lights is helpful. Great info in this hub.
